The Battle of Brandywine was fought between the United States and Great Britain on September 11, 1777, when British forces attacked the Americans along the banks of the Brandywine Creek and at Birmingham Hill. The British won the hard-fought battle, which allowed them to capture Philadelphia two weeks later.

The Battle of Brawner’s Farm was fought on August 28, 1862, during the Northern Virginia Campaign between Union forces under General John Gibbon and General Abner Doubleday and Confederate forces under General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. McCook’s Union cavalry after blocking its retreat from a raid south of Atlanta. The Confederates captured nearly 1,300 Union soldiers, and the defeat prolonged the Atlanta Campaign by allowing supplies to continue reaching Atlanta.

The Battle of Buckland Mills was fought on October 19, 1863, during the Bristoe Campaign. Confederate cavalry under General J.E.B. Stuart and General Fitzhugh Lee defeated Union cavalry under General Judson Kilpatrick, General George A. Custer, and General Henry Davies. Confederates later mocked the Union retreat by calling the battle the “Buckland Races.”
