The Battle of Champion Hill was fought on May 16, 1863, during the Vicksburg Campaign, between Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate forces under John C. Pemberton. Union troops captured Champion Hill, defeated a Confederate counterattack, and forced Pemberton’s army to retreat toward the Big Black River. The decisive Union victory cleared the way for Grant’s advance on Vicksburg.

The Battle of Chancellorsville was fought in and around the town of Chancellorsville, Virginia, from April 30 to May 6, 1863. In what many historians believe to be Confederate General Robert E. Lee's greatest victory, the Army of Northern Virginia defeated Major General Joseph Hooker's Army of the Potomac, despite being out-manned nearly 2 to 1. The South, however, suffered a devastating blow when General Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded by friendly fire during the battle.

The Battle of Chantilly was fought on September 1, 1862, after the Confederate victory at the Second Battle of Bull Run. Union forces stopped Stonewall Jackson from reaching Jermantown and cutting off the Union retreat toward Washington, D.C. Although the battle ended in a tactical draw, it was a strategic Union victory and ended the Northern Virginia Campaign.

The Battle of Charleston was fought on September 13, 1862, during the Kanawha Valley Campaign. Confederate General William Wing Loring forced Colonel Joseph A. J. Lightburn’s Union troops from the city and pursued them to the Ohio River. The Confederate victory temporarily restored Southern control of the Kanawha Valley, but Federal forces regained the region by November 1862.

The Battle of Chattanooga was fought from November 23 through November 25, 1863, during the Chattanooga Campaign. Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant captured Orchard Knob, forced the Confederates to abandon Lookout Mountain, and drove General Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee from Missionary Ridge. The Union victory ended the Confederate Siege of Chattanooga, forced Bragg’s army into Georgia, and opened the way for General William T. Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign.

The Battle of Cheat Mountain — also known as the Battle of Cheat Summit Fort — was fought between the United States of America and the Confederate States of America from September 12 to 15, 1861, during the Civil War. The outcome of the battle was a Union victory. The battle is most well-known for being Robert E. Lee's first offensive of the war and part of the Western Virginia Campaign.

The Battle of Chester Station was fought on May 10, 1864, during the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. Union forces under General Benjamin F. Butler sought to damage the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad, while Confederate forces under General P.G.T. Beauregard tried to drive them away. The battle ended without a clear winner, and Confederate forces later repaired the railroad connection between Richmond and Petersburg.

Fought from September 19 to September 20, 1863, the Battle of Chickamauga produced the highest casualty totals for any battle in the western theater of the American Civil War and second only to the Battle of Gettysburg for the entire war.

The Battle of Chickasaw Bayou was fought from December 26–29, 1862, during the Vicksburg Campaign. General William T. Sherman led about 30,000 Union soldiers against Confederate defenses commanded by General John C. Pemberton and General Stephen D. Lee. Confederate forces defeated Sherman’s attacks, ending the Union’s first major attempt to capture Vicksburg.

The Federal victory at the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain on May 9, 1864 enabled Army of West Virginia to destroy the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad in western Virginia, the last southern railroad connecting Virginia and Tennessee.

The Battle of Cold Harbor was fought from May 31 to June 12, 1864, during the Overland Campaign. Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee defeated the Union army after Grant ordered a massive frontal assault on June 3 that resulted in thousands of Union casualties. The battle was the last major engagement of the Overland Campaign before Grant moved his army across the James River toward Petersburg, Virginia.

However, Hood crossed the Duck River east of Columbia and threatened Schofield’s route to Nashville, forcing the Union army to retreat toward Franklin.

The Second Battle of Corinth was fought on October 3-4, 1862, when General Earl Van Dorn’s Confederate Army of West Tennessee tried to recapture the city from General William S. Rosecrans’ Union Army of the Mississippi. Confederate forces initially drove Union troops into their inner defenses, but Union artillery and counterattacks defeated the assault. The battle ended in a Union victory, although Rosecrans failed to destroy Van Dorn’s retreating army.

The Siege of Corinth was a Union offensive conducted from April 29 to May 30, 1862, to capture the important Confederate railroad center at Corinth, Mississippi. Union General Henry Halleck advanced cautiously with about 120,000 soldiers against General P.G.T. Beauregard’s fortified army. Beauregard used an elaborate deception to evacuate Corinth, allowing the Union to capture the town while the Confederate army escaped.
