Civil War - Military General Orders

On September 21, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 259, appointing Philip H. Sheridan as commander of the Middle Military Division.

On March 15, 1862, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 26 announcing the creation of the Department of the South commanded by Major General David Hunter.

On September 28, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 263, announcing that Joseph Hooker was replacing Samuel P. Heintzelman as commander of the Northern Department.

Major General Ambrose E. Burnside issued General Orders No. 27 on March 25, 1863, taking command of the Department of the Ohio.

On May 21, 1864, Major General Franz Sigel issued General Orders, No. 27 (Department of West Virginia) announcing that Major General David Hunter was replacing him as department commander.

On January 22, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 28, replacing Major General John M. Schofield with Major General William S. Rosecrans as commander of the Department of the Missouri.

On November 14, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 282, announcing the resignation of George B. McClellan and the appointment of Philip H. Sheridan as Major General.

On December 2, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 294, announcing that Grenville M. Dodge had replaced William S. Rosecrans as commander of the Department of the Missouri.

On February 6, 1865, Samuel Cooper, Adjutant and Inspector General (CSA) issued General Orders, No. 3 announcing that Robert E. Lee was appointed General-in-Chief of the Confederate Armies.

On January 14, 1865, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 3, announcing that William T. Sherman and the officers and soldiers of his command, had received the Thanks of Congress for their gallant conduct in their movement through Georgia.

Issued by the U.S. War Department on June 6, 1861, General Orders No. 30 extended the Department of the Ohio to include the State of Missouri.

On September 25, 1861, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston issued General Orders, No. 31, creating the 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac.

On September 18, 1863, the US War Department issued General Orders, No. 316, announcing wholesale appointments to fill the ranks of general officers for the volunteer army. This is a transcript of the appointments to the ranks of major general and brigadier general.

On April 4, 1862, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 34, creating the Department of the Shenandoah, under the command of Nathaniel P. Banks, and also defining George B. McClellan's command.

On January 28, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 34, naming Major General John M. Schofield to replace retiring Major General John G. Foster as commander of the Department of the Ohio. The order also assigned Major General George Stoneman to command of 23d Army Corps.

On October 27, 1863, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 349, announcing that Major General William T. Sherman was appointed to the command of the Department and Army of the Tennessee, and that Major General John A. Logan was appointed to the command of the 15th Army Corps.

On October 28, 1863, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders No. 350, appointing Major General Benjamin F. Butler to command the Department of Virginia and North Carolina, as well as the 18th Army Corps.

On November 16, 1863, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders No. 369, relieving Major General Ambrose E. Burnside of command of the Department of the Ohio and replacing him with Major-General John G. Foster.

On February 14, 1862, Major General Henry Halleck issued General Orders No. 37 (Department of the Missouri) promoting Ulysses S. Grant to command of the newly-created District of West Tennessee.

On May 6, 1862, Confederate General P. G. T. Beauregard issued General Orders, No. 37, placing General Braxton Bragg in command of the Army of the Mississippi.
