Civil War - Military General Orders

On February 22, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 68, announcing a joint resolution extending the Thanks of Congress to William T. Sherman.

William T. Sherman issued General Orders No. 7 on October 8, 1861, establishing his command of the Department of the Cumberland.

On April 13, 1862, Major General David Hunter issued General Orders, No. 7 (Department of the South) freeing the people formerly held in slavery at Fort Pulaski and on Cockspur Island, Georgia.

On July 4, 1862, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 73 announcing numerous promotions and appointments, including the appointment of twelve officers to the rank of brigadier general.

On June 17, 1862, Confederate General P. G. T. Beauregard issued General Orders, No. 75, announcing that he was taking a brief sick leave and temporarily transferring command of the Army of the Mississippi to General Braxton Bragg.

On June 17, 1862, Confederate General Braxton Bragg issued General Orders, No. 76, announcing that he had assumed command of the Army of the Mississippi while General P. G. T. Beauregard was away on sick leave.

Never Issued because President Lincoln did not approve it, Ambrose Burnside's General Order No. 8 proposed the wholesale dismissal of Union officers who Burnside considered hostile to his command.

Issued by the U.S. War Department on September 19, 1861, General Orders Number 80, placed Brigadier-General Ormsby M. Mitchel in command of the Department of the Ohio.

On February 29, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 80, assigning Major General Franz Sigel to command the Department of West Virginia.

On June 1, 1863, Major General Ambrose E. Burnside issued General Orders, No. 84 (Department of the Ohio) suppressing the distribution of the New York World and the publication of the Chicago Times because of their anti-war rhetoric.

On March 3, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 87, announcing that Congress had revived the grade of lieutenant general in the United States Army on February 29, 1864. Ulysses S. Grant received his commission as lieutenant general on the same day the order was issued. 

On January 9, 1863, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 9, dividing the Army of the Cumberland into three army corps.

On August 2, 1862, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 93, announcing appointments to the ranks of major and brigadier. This is a transcript of those appointments.

On November 1, 1861, the U.S. War Department issued General Order No. 94 announcing the retirement of Lieutenant General Winfield Scott and the appointment of Major General George B. McClellan to assume command of the Army of the United States.

On April 15, 1863, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 96, announcing President Abraham Lincoln's appointment of eight corps commanders.

On May 19, 1865 the U.S. War Department issued General Orders No. 96, making John A. Logan the last commander of the Army of the Tennessee.

Issued by the Headquarters of the Army on November 9, 1861, General Orders No. 97 reorganized Union forces in the West.

On March 12, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders No. 98, relieving Henry Halleck of his position of General-in-chief of the Army, promoting William T. Sherman to the command of the Division of the Mississippi, and assigning James B. McPherson to command the Army of the Tennessee.
