Issued by the U.S. War Department on June 6, 1861, General Orders No. 30 extended the Department of the Ohio to include the State of Missouri.

On September 25, 1861, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston issued General Orders, No. 31, creating the 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac.

On September 18, 1863, the US War Department issued General Orders, No. 316, announcing wholesale appointments to fill the ranks of general officers for the volunteer army. This is a transcript of the appointments to the ranks of major general and brigadier general.

On April 4, 1862, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 34, creating the Department of the Shenandoah, under the command of Nathaniel P. Banks, and also defining George B. McClellan's command.

On January 28, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 34, naming Major General John M. Schofield to replace retiring Major General John G. Foster as commander of the Department of the Ohio. The order also assigned Major General George Stoneman to command of 23d Army Corps.

On October 27, 1863, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 349, announcing that Major General William T. Sherman was appointed to the command of the Department and Army of the Tennessee, and that Major General John A. Logan was appointed to the command of the 15th Army Corps.

On October 28, 1863, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders No. 350, appointing Major General Benjamin F. Butler to command the Department of Virginia and North Carolina, as well as the 18th Army Corps.

On November 16, 1863, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders No. 369, relieving Major General Ambrose E. Burnside of command of the Department of the Ohio and replacing him with Major-General John G. Foster.

On February 14, 1862, Major General Henry Halleck issued General Orders No. 37 (Department of the Missouri) promoting Ulysses S. Grant to command of the newly-created District of West Tennessee.

On May 6, 1862, Confederate General P. G. T. Beauregard issued General Orders, No. 37, placing General Braxton Bragg in command of the Army of the Mississippi.

Major General Ambrose Burnside issued General Orders, No. 38 on April 13, 1863, in an effort to silence opponents of the Civil War in the Department of the Ohio.

On December 21, 1863, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 398 announcing that Major General Ulysses S. Grant had received the Thanks of Congress.

On July 17, 1864, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston issued General Orders, No. 4 (AoT), relinquishing his command of the Army of Tennessee to General John Bell Hood.

On July 3, 1861, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders N0. 40, appointing Major General John C. Fremont to command the newly-created Western Department.

On February 1, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 41 announcing the Thanks of Congress extended to Nathaniel P. Banks, Ambrose E. Burnside, Joseph Hooker, George G. Meade, Oliver O. Howard, and the officers and soldiers of the Army of the Potomac.

On July 12, 1863, Major General David Hunter issued General Orders, No. 46 announcing that Brigadier General Q. A. Gillmore had temporarily replaced him as commander of the Department of the South.

On July 12, 1863, Brigadier General Quincy A. Gillmore issued General Orders, No. 47 announcing that he had assumed command of the Department of the South.

Issued by the U.S. War Department on July 25, 1861, General Orders No. 47 combined the departments of Washington and Northeastern Virginia into a division, with Major General George B. McClellan commanding.

Issued by the U.S. War Department on January 17, 1865, General Orders No. 5 merged the Department of the Ohio into the Department of the Cumberland.

On March 9, 1863, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 57, replacing Major General Samuel R. Curtis with Major General Edwin V. Sumner as commander of the Department of the Missouri.
