Edwin Vose Sumner was an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War and the oldest field commander to serve in the war. During the Secession Crisis, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him to the rank of Brigadier General, replacing David E. Twiggs. According to legend, he was struck in the head by a musket ball, but it bounced off, earning him the nickname “Bull Head.”
