The Battle of Upperville was fought on June 21, 1863, during the Gettysburg Campaign. Union cavalry under General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick and General John Buford attacked Confederate cavalry commanded by General J.E.B. Stuart. Although Stuart’s forces withdrew west toward the Blue Ridge Mountains, they prevented Union troops from breaking through their cavalry screen and gathering information about Robert E. Lee’s army.
