General Orders No. 57, USWD, March 9, 1863

On March 9, 1863, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 57, replacing Major General Samuel R. Curtis with Major General Edwin V. Sumner as commander of the Department of the Missouri.

War Dep’t, Adjutant General’s Office,
Washington, March 9, 1863

I. — Major General Samuel R. Curtis, U. S. Volunteers, is relieved from the command of the Department of the Missouri.

II. — Major General Edwin V. Sumner, U. S. Volunteers, is assigned to the command of the Department of the Missouri.
